RELIGIOUS EDUCATION and FAITH FORMATION

All families are invited to participate in Family Faith Formation whether their children attend public or private school. The program runs from October through May each year. Parents attend with their children the first week of the month, either on Sunday Morning or Wednesday evening. The children (only) also attend on the third Sunday morning of the month. A detailed schedule for the year is provided at registration during the first two weeks of September.

Children and adults learning together fosters an increased bonding between parents and their children and abundant opportunity for daily growing in our Faith at home. It also helps develop a true sense of community among the many families of our parish community.

We are careful to follow closely what the Catholic Church teaches. We examine each of the four parts of the Catechism of the Catholic Church; Faith, Liturgy and Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer. We also include a study of Scripture and the relationship between the written Word and Sacred Oral Tradition.
Additionally, we address myths and untruths that exist in the world about the Catholic Church and prepare you and your children to share our Catholic Faith, gently, accurately, and respectfully.
Those who actively participate grow in knowledge of the truth of the teachings of Catholic Church. It is through knowledge of the truths of our Faith that we are better able to live a life pleasing to God and to share our gift of Faith with others so that they too might have a place in the kingdom of Heaven.

Sacrament preparation involves a minimum of two year’s formal education prior to receiving sacraments.  Parents also participate in the preparation process

“The catechesis of children, young people, and adults aims at teaching them to mediate on The Word of God in personal prayer, practicing it in liturgical prayer, and internalizing it at all times in order to bear fruit in a new life.” —Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2688)

SACRAMENT PREPARATION

Sacrament preparation involves a minimum of two year’s formal education prior to receiving sacraments.  Parents also participate in the preparation process.

Print and complete the Communion Pre-registration form for 1st grade and Registration form for 2nd grade.

Print and complete the Confirmation Pre-registration form for 7th grade and the Registration form for 8th grade.

Completed forms may be returned to the Parish Office by mail, dropped off in person (Office hours are M-F, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or in the Sunday Offertory (please mark ATTN:  Sacramental Registration Form).

We are very privileged to assist families in preparing their children for the sacrament of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Preparation occurs both at home and in the parish sacrament preparation program. Parents, as the first and primary teachers of their children, must attend Sunday Mass with their youth every week and maintain a home environment that fosters the development of deep love for God.

Registration takes place in September and proof of baptism is necessary.

We are pleased to assist you and your family in any way possible. Any questions you have concerning the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation may be directed to the Parish Office for contact information.

It is expected that children will be enrolled in Sacrament Preparation and either the parish Faith Formation program or Catholic school for two years prior to receiving these sacraments. The normal age for reception of this sacrament at St. John Vianney is in the 2nd grade.

Youth wishing to complete their initiation by receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation are also expected to participate in either the parish Faith Formation program or be enrolled in Catholic school for a period of two years prior to receiving this sacrament. The normal age for reception of this sacrament at St. John Vianney is in the 8th grade. High School youth may also be prepared in this or the RCIA program.

Weekly participation at Sunday Mass and regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation are central requirements.

The candidate’s sponsor must also be an actively practicing Catholic and if possible, occasionally attend Mass with the candidate. Sponsors should actively encourage and support the candidate in their faith development throughout the preparation period and be committed to continuing this role into adulthood.

Religious Education and Faith Formation

Pre –K through 8th Grade
Our Faith Formation / CCD program provides excellent instruction on the teachings of our Catholic Faith. We have an intergenerational program serving Pre-K through High School and also adults. We meet on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Sundays each month from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. Parents, as the first teachers of their children, are provided tools with which to teach their children at home on the 3rd Sunday (and 5th if there is one). This also allows for families to come to the 10 a.m. Children’s Mass on the 3rd Sunday each month.

On the 1st Sunday of the month we have Family Faith Formation. Parents, grandparents, and children come to Monsignor Trainer parish hall together for a shared meal, prayer, and then we break into small groups by age.

On the 2nd and 4th Sunday each month the children go directly to classrooms.

High School
High School youth are encouraged to participate in the family event on the first Sunday each month. If there is no breakout group for teenagers that month they are welcome to join the adult session.

For more information on our High School Youth ministry program please go to page .

Vacation Bible School (pre-k to 12th grade)
Each summer, St. John Vianney offers a one-week, high-energy, fun and effective Bible School for children ages 5–11 using a Catholic curriculum. Each day the children hear a bible story, learn a verse and a bible point that they are encouraged to put into practice in their daily life. The children travel within a small group from station to station where these points are reinforced through a variety of activities and lessons. The children have lot of fun learning more about God. Each day begins and ends with prayer.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY
EDGE is part of Life Teen, an international Catholic youth ministry. This widely successful program is now being used in more than1,500 parishes. It is a comprehensive youth ministry program based on, focused on, and directed toward Christ. Our goal is to lead teens closer to Christ.

EDGE is geared specifically to middle school adolescents who are on “the Edge” because so much is going on in their lives. It can be a very stressful and difficult time for young people and their parents. Within the context of faith, middle school youth are moving from a child-like spirituality to an independent ownership of their Catholic faith and identity. Through EDGE, we develop in these youth, a fuller and stronger understanding of Faith; a habit of living it in their daily lives and a strong foundation on which they can continue to build for life.

The EDGE meets weekly, on Friday nights, from October through May. Meals are served.

Please call the Parish Office for more information.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY

St. John Vianney offers the YDisciple program from Augustine Institute as a means to develop our high school youth to become faithful, active, and effective disciples of Christ and adult leaders of our Church and greater community.

As YDisciple says, “It is our firm conviction that the future of the Church depends on good youth ministry. Future priestly and religious vocations, future marriages and families, future strong Catholics . . . all grow exponentially when a solid foundation is experienced during the formative teenage years.

YDisciple is a process for youth ministry that empowers parishes to bring the vision of the New Evangelization to life through a comprehensive approach to youth ministry that includes:
Adult Leader Training, Curriculum Resources, Ongoing Support and Parent Resources.”

YDisciple meets weekly, on Wednesdays, from October through May. Meals are served.

Please contact the parish office for more information.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
R.C.I.A. OF ADULTS

The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) is the process of welcoming adults into the Catholic Church. Adults who have not been baptized, have been baptized in another Christian faith or baptized Catholics who have not received the Eucharist and/or Confirmation are invited to be part of our R.C.I.A. process journey. There are four stages in the process : Inquiry or Precatechmenate, Catechumenate, Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation, and Mystagogy (further Catechesis).

All of these stages have sessions for adults that are held in the Vianney Center on Tuesdays, from 7–9 p.m.

Remember: God's love is always approachable.
Our doors are always open.

R.C.I.A. ADAPTED FOR CHILDREN

We also have a religious education program for children that is adapted from the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults It is especially designed for young people, ages 6 to 17, who have not been baptized. Preparation of these young people for the Sacraments of Initiation is part of a journey of faith for the whole family which helps them come to the realization of God’s immense love for them.

To schedule an appointment or for more information on either program, please call the Parish Office.
